LUBEK'S RARE INTERESTS, FACTS & MORE, UNIQUE GOODIES! BY: JAN PAUL LUBEK, BD, Phd ======================================================= - Kasparov stated that it was up to Krammnik to take the initiative in seeing that there was some way for his challenger to be found. "Winning the world title comes with certain responsibilities. The longer he waits, the less value his title will have. Kramnik may have some dreams of his own, but he has to take account of economic realities. Money does not grow on trees, or fall from the sky; he must take account of what people are willing to pay money for, and I believe that they are most willing to pay for a rematch between Kramnik and myself. Kasparov has bemoaned the standard of play at Corus, saying the quality of the games between the elite players was below par and blaming the obvious tension of the occasion. He also made some remarkable remarks on the world championship situation, saying that Kramnik, not Anand, was the real title holder. "Kramnik has 120 years of tradition behind him, Anand has an organization. I recognize only Kramnik as the world champion, as he defeated me to become it. To become world champion you have beat your predecessor; the name of the organization, be it FIDE, PCA, Braingames or Pepsi, doesn’t matter. That way you are part of a tradition of a title which has only had fourteen holders in almost 120 years." (This, of course, conveniently overlooks the fact that FIDE conducted the world championships with the universal endorsement of the chess community for many decades, and that most people think that the world champion should not have control over who his opponent is, or when and where he plays matches. For all its flaws, the FIDE system does at least attempt to determine the champion in a fair way.) Remarkably, Kasparov also claimed that Kramnik had "a moral obligation" to play a rematch, adding: "It seems as if the new generation has little respect for moral obligations." My goodness, Kaspy sounds just like my mother! And considering that Kasparov held on to the title for some five years from 1995-2000 without playing any challenger, it's a bit rich for him to explain Kramnik's moral obligations. 1/28/01 Masta moze Svasta! - Asshole Napoleon Bonaparte once playedd with the Turk. The great military leader lost the game, because he faced one of the best players of that time, Allgaier (1763-1823), who hid inside the machine. 1/28/2001 www.encyklopedia.interia.pl youtube.com/watch?v=PLSXd0C5v7M Hank Williams Jr & Sr - Alexandre Louis Honore Deschapelles (11780-1847), reputedly the strongest player between the death of Philidor and the time of La Bourdonnais, boasted that he had learned all he needed to know about chess in three days. BLACK CHESS VICTORIES ====================== - One of the surprises of the Corvus 20001 tournament was that a striking number of victories were won with Black. Just think - 19 victories against 22 defeats! It stands to reason that at a tournament of such a high standing, the right to make the first move is a very important factor. Superplayers rarely blunder, and therefore an extra tempo for developing pieces considerably influences the outcome of the struggle. But this time those who played with Black nearly achieved absolute parity. I can suggest two explanations to account for this situation. 1. The players simply have a better feel for the positions that arise in the openings which they play with Black. Why? The point is that, given little time for preparation between tournaments, chess players pay more attention to their "black openings". It is obvious that if you play with White and slip in the opening, all you lose is the advantage, later in the game you can play with no trouble. But if you slip up when playing with Black, the consequences are much more serious! In some openings, for example in the Sicilian Defense, you can be simply checkmated, and in some other openings you can be slowly dying, unable to exercise any counterplay. So chess players choose to perfect their black repertory, and they often lack the time to get around to their white play... 2. The tournament drew lots of go-ahead chess players who were determined to play with White for a win against - as they thought - weaker participants, and in doing so they often risked right to the edge of the abyss. In this respect, we can recall the following games: Timman - Tiviakov, Adams - Fedorov, and Kramnik - Morozevich. And as far as Alexander Morozevich is concerned, this is a very peculiar story! He played eight effective games at the tournament, and seven of them were won with Black. I analyzed his games carefully and came to the conclusion that most often Black had the upper hand in the opening! The Muscovite always invents something new at the initial stage of the game, and his opponents just have no time to put two and two together on the spot. At first I wanted to mention only Morozevich’s games as the best games of the week, but ultimately I managed to resist the temptation. The point is that the other chess players supported his "black" rush! Chess is no exception. Estonia's Paul Keres (1915-75) was, perhaps, the greatest player never to have won (or played in for that matter) the World Championship. He was seen as the natural heir to Alekhine but due to a mixture of World War II and Soviet politics that saw his small country annexed by the USSR, he never managed to earn a match for the title despite coming within half a point of it on more than one occasion. Over the years, the conspiracy theorists pointed to the presence of the KGB, who they alleged, "influenced" Keres to under perform against the ranks of the great Soviet grandmasters, since Stalin saw chess as a means of establishing communism as the superior intellect. Whether Keres did a deal with the devil in order to save his career (and perhaps his life) because of political pressures, is still open to question to this day. When asked once, while visiting Estonia, why Paul Keres had never won the world championship, his friend, Boris Spassky replied cryptically: "He was unlucky - like his country." Playing in the Vancouver Open in Canada in 1975, Keres died tragically of a heart attack after winning the tournament. Each year, both Vancouver and Estonia remember the fallen giant by staging a memorial tournament - the first player to have memorials in two countries! Following his death, Keres, who was hailed as a national hero in Estonia, received a state funeral in the country's capital, Tallin. In a further honour from Estonia, Keres also became the first (and only) chess player to be immortalised on a bank note. Charitable Karpov to tour middle east: Former world champion Anatoly Karpov will tour the Middle East in May to raise $5 million for a charitable organisation, according to Associated Press. The agency says Karpov will visit Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Israeli Arab city of Nazareth during his 60-day tour. The aim is to raise money for the YMCA (the world alliance of Young Men's Christian Associations) group, which provides accomodation to pilgrims visiting the Holy Land. AP says Karpov plans to play 20 games, earning $250,000 in sponsorship for each encounter. YMCA officials say recent violence between israelis and Palestinians has affected their revenue sources. Egyptology: Amon (also: Amon, Amen): Egyptian god of creation (name connected to real God, Amen) name meaning: What is hidden or can not be seen, the god of hidden or secret wisdom. Djesekare means the Ka of Re (son of sun) is holy. Chess Academy: =============== The Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Barcelona in Spain has introduced chess as a subject, according to ChessBase. Spanish correspondent Fernando Moran Fernandez says the course, taught by Luis Comas, will take 40 students. To qualify they'll have to beat the lecturer in a simul (!) or pass a special exam. I wonder what the homework/assignments will be. How can we use chess in our lives? The fourth World Champion, Alexander Alekhine, said some words of genius: "By means of chess I build my character. Chess first of all teaches you to be objective." In my experience I have been influenced by the deep wisdom behind these words. Chess has also helped me to understand that without an objective evaluation of a position, it is impossible to achieve good results not only in chess but in your life as well. Undoubtedly chess has a very important pedagogic value. It develops memory, logic and fantasy. It improves our reactions, attention and capacity for work in our lives. It also helps us develop a deep respect for our opponents. Morphy: ======== Q: Why did Howard Staunton never play Paul Morphy? If they had have played who would have won? - Jamie Atkinson You would not believe how much has been written about these simple questions. In the mid-1800s, Englishman Howard Staunton was the leader of the European players. American Paul Morphy appeared out of nowhere to easily dominate the poorly regarded US chess world, and his backers quickly sent out challenges to the top European masters. When Staunton declined (as did others, since they really did not believe Morphy could be a serious challenge), Morphy set sail for Europe in 1858. There he routed everyone in his path, including Anderssen and the highly regarded Harrwitz. Meanwhile, Morphy's backers barraged Staunton with match proposals. Staunton respected Morphy's play, although he made several caustic comments in the press, and said he would meet the American in a match when possible. But he postponed and cancelled various arrangements, claiming heavy obligations in his work. (Few players were true professionals in the 19th century and Staunton was a highly regarded literary scholar.) The basic conclusion is that Staunton's work obligations were very real, but if he had truly wanted to face Morphy in a match it would have occurred. As for the result, that is something we can never know. It seems unlikely to me that Staunton, though a great pioneer, would have been able to resist the remarkable technique and tactical genius of Morphy where Anderssen and his other peers so clearly failed. Also relevant is that Staunton was almost completely inactive and past his prime (twice Morphy's age) by the time of Morphy's visit, something he was as aware of as anyone. Taliban targets chess: ====================== Appeal: Not content with destroying the sacred monuments of other religions, the notorious Taliban militia in Afghanistan is now targetting chess-players. The Afghanistan Chess Federation has appealed for international help in meeting its FIDE dues, claiming that the ruling Taliban group in their country has been harrassing them. Afghan Federation Secretary Ajmal Jamshidi told NetChessNews that the Taliban members had been destroying chessboards and burning offices. He writes: "The group of fundamentalist like mujahiddin and taliban destroyed all our chess clubs and they burned out all our chess boards, magazines and tables, offices. Always they are fighting between each other, many cities and buildings of people are destroyed and people need help to live and take activities in culture, economic and children wants to go to school. But unfortunately we lost all our live. And not any government in our country to bring normal living for people. Many of our chess players leaved the country and the group of taliban punished many of our chess players. Taliban Idiots ban chessboards -------------------------------- Not long after wrecking the Kabul chess club, Afghanistan's notorious Taliban militia has banned chessboards - along with lipstick, satellite dishes and statues. After they blew the bejesus out of those Buddhist landmarks the other day, it got me to wondering: what happens when they run out of things to ban/destroy/kill? A theological crisis, no doubt. Anyway, here's the Reuters report: ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - Afghanistan's ruling Taliban movement on Wednesday banned the import of 30 items it said were un-Islamic, including playing cards, neckties, lipsticks, nail polish and chessboards. The radical Islamic movement's Voice of Shariat radio, monitored in Islamabad, said the ban was ordered by the Taliban's supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar. Other items listed as banned for being "against the Sharia," or Islamic law, include fireworks, statues, fashion catalogs and greeting cards featuring pictures of people, musical instruments and cassettes. Also banned were computer discs, movies, satellite TV dishes, pig fat products and anything made of human hair. The radio quoted the leader's order as telling border guards and security agencies to seize the banned items and hand them over to the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which acts as the Taliban's religious police. Wednesday's order follows one last month banning the printing of pictures of animals or verses from the Koran on any products. The Taliban, which swept to power in 1996 and controls about 95 percent of the war-ravaged country, has already banned television, the playing of music and photographs of people and animals. It has also barred women from education, most types of work, and from going out without wearing the all-enveloping "burqa" veil. Men are ordered to grow long beards and not wear Western dress. The movement provoked international protests earlier this year by ordering the destruction of ancient Buddhist statues and asking the country's small non-Muslim community to wear distinguishing badges. The statues, including the world's largest two Buddhas carved in a cliff near the central Afghan town of Bamiyan, were destroyed, but no decree has yet come from Omar about the badges to be worn by non-Muslims. "We never forget your help in this difficulty moment in Afghanistan. We hope the sun will be shining in Afghanistan too and we will be able to help chess players that they like to live like others people of the world and take chess activities in all International tournaments and in Olympiad 2002. After normalizing condition of our country we will be return amount of your money that will be you are sending. Yours sincerely; Ajmal Jamshidi Secretariat of Afghan National Chess Federation." (I initially thought this might be a con - along the lines of the notorious Nigerian form-letters. However, Mr Jamshidi is listed on the FIDE site, and the other details appear to be correct, so the whole thing appears to be an honest appeal for help - ed.) The study, to be published tomorrow in the journal Nature, found that grand masters tended to use parts of the brain reserved for long-term memory while the less experienced chess players use areas of the brain needed to analyze new situations. That's consistent with a decades-old theory called "chunking'' that suggests that chess mastery stems from the ability to store thousands and thousands of chess strategies. Consequently, experts rely on long-term memories of that information, while newer players have to analyze each move as if for the first time. "Grand masters can recognize the key elements in a problems situation much more rapidly than amateur players,'' the study authors said. "Grand masters seem to rely more on remote than on recent memory.'' To study which parts of the brain were used, the researchers had 20 male players compete against a computer chess program. Their brain activity was measured in the five seconds after the computer made a move. Polska Ekonomia 2/2001: ======================= - Jak to mozliwe ze podatki od pracy takkie wielkie ?
