SOLVING THE SCHOOL PROBLEMS: Introducing The New College Degree By: MR. Jan Paul Lubek ---------------------------------------------- The Basic degree, BD or Basic Education Certificate ======================================================= Welcome to the very practical Basic Degree!!! Let me introduce you to the practical B-degree of the future... Feel free to propose this idea at your school faculty meetings, wherever, but give credit where credit is due. Some of the requirements are subject to change over time. The B-degree idea was created for those who would like to have college education but for many different reasons can not attend or afford. It's an initial of the last name of a great/fine man who invented it. He thought about this degree for years, he thought how to make it work, be effective, not expensive. It is not a certificate program. The B-degree is NOT A FRESHMAN DEGREE either. Some of the subjects like philosophy must be concrete and above 100 level. Some classes below 100 level are OK. High School diploma or GED is required! High School Diploma is actually High School Degree & GED does not even come close to it. It is a very distinguished degree. The required minimum is 15 credit hours. Students may take 5 classes for 3 credit hours, that's 15 credits. Or take mandatory Philosophy 101 with emphasis on ethics. Upon the graduation the student will get a lifetime certificate for 15 credit hours that's valid all across USA if his/hers GPA is at least 2.5 GPA, B grade. Initially, The B-degree was created with High School students in mind during their fifth year in HS. In the afternoon & evening they would go to college, in the morning to HS! It is the original idea unlike the other college High School programs that only demand & strain students to their limits by giving them shortest period of time. They mix High School and College together, which is a bad idea. But I would not recommend that. After HS graduation, students must take at least one semester during fall or spring semesters to get the BD! High School was created to last 4 years but that was not written in the stone. Originally, it was also ment to prepare students for a career and for a trade/vocation. Not many of the HS students will go to college for many obvious reasons. Also 10+ college credits helps you get better in military & have better standings, especially if you have GED. The B-degree was created to extend High School to five years or as additional college education, it's very practical, the B-degree. One credit hour = should be ten x 60 minutes classes, not 50 minutes! Some schools in america, like pathetic CPS & pathetic CCC have a not practical pathetic/corrupt educational systems. They also support a socalled program known as 'Bridge Program'. Students with 2.5 GPA can attend junior colleges, students with 3.0 GPA can attend expensive universities, what a waste of dough! Junior and Seniors can take one college credit course each semester, thus after 4 semesters they can have around 12 credit hours of college. That's not always good, actually it's bad! Instead of wasting their time and life they ought to have those classes after junior year as seniors & super seniors. Some schools in Chicgo offer LPN courses during junior & senior year but that's very difficult to finish in 2 years. If you are junior & senior, you take 2 years of exhausting/hard nursing courses... What for ? And if you take it senior year, then when one graduates High School, one must pay the last year out of its own pocket... that's total stupidity, especially with pathetic CPS, Chicago Public Schools. Why not simply extend High School to five years, divide senior year into two ? Extra year will be very beneficial to the students but also to their families thus to the society & the community. The Graduation from High School is around the middle of June. All these high schools today teach how to get ready for college and the simple fact is only some will graduate, only some will attend... What's the use of knowledge if you don't have experience in the real employment world ? Who will hire some 18 year old kid without any work experience ? This happened to me and to many others a lot. Society is to be blamed for ignorance and crimes because it never gave young and those in need the proper chances. The federal and/or state government today pays selected HS students for up to two years of college, up to Associate Degree! In order for a student to use that offer he/she must work extra hard, must take summer classes during junior and senior years, the government will usually only pay for those classes (or whoever else pays) if a student is currently in High School. That is just way too much of a stress on a student. That is also a waste of tax payers' money. Why waste money on a 20 year old punk's education at some expensive University ? Why overload a student with Associate degree during High School ? Junior college was ment to be after High School, the best thing to do is provide a student with a certificate from college, a career certificate of up to 30+ paid credit hours with the BD degree. And final High School schooling will be done during the fifth year of high school so the government covers the costs. The B-degree constitutes of at least 3 subjects: Philosophy 101 (3), Psychology 101 (3) are a must!!! That's 7 credit hours; however additional 3 credits course student chooses. -Welness class of 3 credits could be replaccement for psychology. Emphasis will be put on professional developmental skills; best taken during summer, before start of fall semester. Student can also take one credit hour of PE like basketball, golf, etc... The voluntary intro to college could be 1 hour. Emphasis on health and social issues will be included in the mandatory Fitness & Wellness of Mind/Living with Health/Welness class. The 6 dimensions of wellness are Social, Occupational, Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Emotional. The The B-degree consists of five general educational requirement divisions. The sixth division is separate. It's an elective, teaches people some basics of life. Accounting and keyboarding classes are benefitial. The B-degree requires 10+ hours with emphasis on a particular subject or career/trade. Finals week will be 3 weeks after December's last attendance week, thus students get more time to study. The 10+ credit hours constitute and fulfill general requirements for The B-degree. High School Degree or GED is necessary. Five courses can be taken in one semester for 10+ credit hours, however I recommend students divide 15 credit hours into 2 semesters. These credit hours must be distributed among the five general education areas listed below in such a manner as to provide lifetime benefit to a student, in private and professional life. When a student graduates from HS with a 2.5 GPA or higher, he/she will receive a 10 free credit hours voucher/certifacate that never expires & it's good at any public college. The B-degree Subjects Requirements; (BD-LAS) The B-degree of (Liberal) Arts & Sciences requires 15/15 mandatory credit hours, in addition students can choose from career programs! The core of the B-degree requires some of the following 10+ credit hours required for graduation: 1 Review of public speaking (English) (or open course, p.e., typing, etc) 1 CR 2 Fitness & Wellness of Body/Living with Health 1 CR (or Psychology Fundamentals 3 CR) 2 CR 3 Fitness & Wellness of Mind/Living with Health 1 CR 2nd Semester (could be dividexd into 2 semesters) 4 Fundamentals of (Quantitative+everyday life) Mathematics 2/3 CR 5 Philosophy - with Philosophical Psychology with emphasis on Values, Morals & Ethics 3 CR - Humanities 6 Business/Economics review with consumer psychology & ethics, Self-employment/Job-Career Oriented course 3+ CR - At least 3 good philosophical books must be read (e.g. Plato's Republic, Phaebo, Descartes' Dualism or Principles of Philosophy: Cogito Ego Sum - I Think, Therefore I am) - Properly typed Summary/Essay must be giveen on each book. If taken in 2 semesters then: First semester: 1, 2, 2 CR; Second: 3, 3 CR or 1, 1, 3, 1, 2, 3 in one semester. Full semester should be minimum 15 credits! If the student chooses 15 credit hours, than the BD degree will be divided into many of these educational categories: 1. Communications, 2. Natural Sciences/Social Sciences, 3. Humanities, 4. Consumer Education 5. Electives 1. Communications: 3+ credits English 101, Speech or special emphasis will be put on Reading Literature - Reading 101. Among other literary work, three books will be required to be read and given report about. In order for students to be able to read three books and to summarize them. Literature classes could be in session for a full school year, two credit hours for each semester, same class, same students. 2. Natural Sciences: 3+ credits Biology, Mathematics (Quantitative Reasoning), Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Oceanography, Astronomy. Quantitative reasoning is the application of mathematical concepts and skills to solve real world problems. 3. Social & Behavior Sciences: 3 credits Sociology, Geography, Psychology/Professional Development: Health for Proper Living, History, Politics, Anthropology 4. Humanities/Fine Arts 3+ credits Philosophy, Critical Thinking, Ethics-Morals, Political Philosophy, Natural Philosophical Psychology (the first philosophy which also steps into the functioning of the mind, this fine topic must be covered in any Philosophy study), Music, Foreign Language, Religion, Drama (Communications are considered by some part of Humanities) 5. Consumer education: 3+ credits Business, International Business and Economics combined into one class. 6. Electives: 3+ credits Keyboarding, Accounting, Computer Workshop, (Computer) Drawing/Drafting, P.E-Physical Fitness (walking, archery, Lubek's squares), Sculpturing, Painting, Theater workshop & performances + A particular course/class may be worth more credits -INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY with special emphasis on ethics and morality. -ALL THE CLASSES FOR THE BD DEGREE WILL BE THOUGHT IN COLLEGE. -IF POSSIBLE COLLEGE CLASSES COULD BE TAUGHT IN High Schools, IN THE EVENINGS. -INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY (with special emphasis on ethics and morality) AND HEALTH FOR PROPER LIVING ARE MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS FOR BD DEGREE. THESE 2 CLASSES ARE THE BACKBONE OF THE DEGREE. THE HEALTH FOR PROPER LIVING WILL CONSIST OF SOCIAL, PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL INDIVIDUAL/GROUP TOPICS. -ALL THE CLASSES FOR THE BD DEGREE SHOULD BE THOUGHT IN COLLEGES, HOWEVER FOR STUDENTS WILLING TO HAVE EXTRA YEAR OF SCHOOLING, High School SHOULD EXTEND THEIR CURRICULUM WITH THE B-Degree TO FIVE YEARS TOTAL. * The first Honorary Distinguished BD Degree goes to the author himself* The B-degree was named after the inventor of the degree but also derived from Jewish Scriptures & Old Testament "L" letter, that was most important letter, it stood for God. It also reflects power & importance. L-el, ends the names of many archangels like: Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, etc... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As mentioned, after High School, there will be another year, that year may be held at the High School location but the hours may differ. It will be for college credit courses. Students will get the practical B-degree (In reality B-degree may be more practical than any other degree) The semester must be 8 weeks long. Graduation: Graduation could be held on the third week of January. Schools are urged to follow these guidelines, if not, always have same time, same day Second Monday of the month for graduation: Graduations could be held on January 11th, no matter what day is it and on the first Monday of June. In order to get a degree, two semesters will be required; Depending on what is the major/minor/situation; it may take few more semesters if it's an advanced course or if the state law requires certain amount of hours. Health for effective living will be offered through 2 semesters. - The July Graduation will be on the first Saturday of the month. (Originally I wanted it to be on the 2nd week of the second Monday of July, then I wanted it in August on first Monday, then again in July, but first Monday of July is best except if it's July 1st and graduation on July 4th could be moved to July 11th). - Graduation in January (Originally I wanteed it to to be in December) or on MLK day! will be on the second Mondays of the second week of the month. - Graduation ceremonies will commence in thhe evening - around 9 PM. - After Graduation school is closed (privatte ones) until the opening of the new school year. - Graduation will be held one week after teests are taken, the remaining time in between will be used as a 2nd chance to take the final tests. - Fall semester ends in late December, studdents can pick up their diplomas earlier but graduation ceremony is after holidays, in January, in order to retake the tests for those who failed or did not do so good. - It's best to have graduation the first Moonday of June, July or January, if a school only holds one graduation, then in should be in June. There are three semesters in a school year; From September to December - Fall; From January to May - Spring. From May to July - Summer; (8 weeks) Each semester (except for Summer, 8 weeks) should be 17+. (Keep in mind that two of those 17 weeks are not set for education but for midterm/term finals/tests/preparation/vacatioms). Here's exactly how the January Graduation Mondays will look like; All These dates repeat themselves every five to six years but sometimes dates repeat every 11 years: Jan 10 2005, Jan 20 2006, Jan 20 2007, Jan 14 2008, Jan 12 2009, Jan 13 2010; - Here's exactly how second May Mondays willl look like: 5/7/2007; 5/12/2008; 5/11/2009; 5/10/2010; 5/9/2011; 5/7/2012; - Here's exactly how first July Mondays willl look like: 7/2 2007; Jul 7 2008; Jul 13 2009; Jul 5 2010; Jul 4 2011; Jul 9 2012. If first Monday is on January 1st or 2nd, it will not count as school's first Monday of January, it has to be at least on January 3rd. I dont know why higher education institutions start fall semester in the middle of August? The fall semester should begin Tuesday after Labor Day. Teachers must report to work before. Classes should never start in August. People are still vacationing or doing other things. The end of semester in December is not recommended, extra time is better for the finals study and students stay in school longer, there are other social, family reasons as well... Tests will be given from noon until midnite, teachers will get material ready until noon. School Solutions' Permission required for publication in part or in full of this Part I outline! I spent a lot of time on this degree, especially on number of college hours! The essential 11 CR's... number 11 has magical sound to it too. I call Nr. 11, elzen. I'd like those who never had any college classes to have a chance at broader things in life, get some education with the B-degree! This is final rough draft but it's not the conclusive report! Part 1 of 3 Fall Semester Dates: Fall semester should always start on Wednesday after Labor Day, teachers would report on Tuesday. K-12/13 will always have 20 weeks because those are public schools. But college has about 16 weex, enough to end before Christmas time. The final school day will be Monday after 20th week, to compensate loss of Monday due to Labor day; the final review & finals (20th week) will commence on first Monday of the week in January. if it's January 3rd or later, classes will commence, if Monday is on January 2nd, then classes will commence on January 9th.
